Docs Using easl

Navigation

Find your way around a big board with Go to, ⌘J, Zoom to Fit, walkthrough steps and Back and Forward, plus every keyboard shortcut.

All docs pages

Getting lost on a big board always has a one-step way back. easl’s navigation keys work wherever the keyboard is, including inside a terminal or a web page: the window takes them before the tile does.

Pan and zoom

  • Trackpad: scroll pans, pinch zooms.
  • Mouse: the wheel pans, ⌘-scroll zooms around the pointer, ⇧-scroll pans sideways.
  • Zoomed far out, tiles become cards: a picture of the tile, tinted by its agent’s state. Zoom in to use them. What you can’t see stops drawing; the sessions keep running.

Go to… (⌘P)

A search panel inside the window. It lists first what needs you (blocked agents, then marked tiles, then finished agents you haven’t seen, flagged Blocked, Marked or Done), then your recent code locations, then every group and tile by title, caption, path or terminal name.

  • Type a file path to open it; core.py:120 opens at a line.
  • @name finds a symbol.
  • Once you type, a note’s headings are listed too.
  • An agent’s terminal is framed together with its follow tile when both fit.

Needs you (⌘J)

⌘J goes to the next thing that needs you: blocked agents first, then tiles with attention markers, then agents that finished while you looked elsewhere. Press it again for the next. With nothing pending, a notice says “Nothing needs you”.

Something that needs you off screen gets a pill at the edge of the view pointing at it; click the pill to go there.

Zoom to Fit (⌘9) and Back to content

⌘9 frames the main cluster of work, not a few far-off strays. Panned into empty space? A “Nothing here · Back to content” pill at the bottom brings you home.

Zoom and Scale

Zoom stops at 100%. ⌘= and ⌘- step through 10, 15, 25, 33, 50, 67, 75, 90 and 100%; ⌘0 is actual size (with a selection, the selection at 100%).

For bigger text, Scale the tile instead (Object › Scale): ⌃⌘= and ⌃⌘- step the selected tile, or the one you’re typing in, through 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 200%, and ⌃⌘0 puts it back. Its text grows with it, and it moves over rather than cover its neighbours. ⌥-drag a corner to scale freely; a plain corner drag resizes and reflows.

Step through the board

⌥⌘↑ ⌥⌘↓ ⌥⌘← ⌥⌘→ move to the nearest tile that way, like a tiling window manager. A terminal you land on takes the keyboard; ⌘Esc leaves it.

When the selected tile has a next-step arrow (an agent’s walkthrough joins its stops this way, labelled “1 · parse” and so on), ⌥⌘→ and ⌥⌘← step along it in order, whatever the layout. Each stop is shown whole, centered if it wasn’t in view. At the end, a notice says “Last step” (or “First step”).

Back and Forward (⌘[ ⌘])

⌘[ and ⌘] go back and forward through where you went: Go to, definitions, ⌘-clicked references, links, ⌘J, ⌘9, walkthrough steps and Review Changes. Back after stepping selects the previous stop.

Links go to what already shows them: a path:line link, Go to, a definition or a ⌘-click goes to the code tile already showing those lines, else opens them beside you.

Hide Canvas Chrome (⌥⌘T)

View › Hide Canvas Chrome, for presenting: hides the toolbar, the tray, selection rings, author marks, code tiles’ header rows and agents’ markers. A blocked agent’s ring, bubble and edge pill stay, so nobody is left waiting unseen. Esc, or the item again, brings everything back.

Coming from Linux or Windows

  • ⌘ is your Ctrl. ⌘ (Command, the Windows key on a PC keyboard) does what Ctrl does elsewhere: ⌘T, ⌘W, ⌘Z, ⌘C, ⌘V, ⌘= and ⌘- to zoom. A Ctrl shortcut pressed on the canvas shows a notice naming its ⌘ key, once per key per session.
  • ⌃ stays the terminal’s: ⌃C interrupts and ⌃D ends input; copy with ⌘C and paste with ⌘V.
  • ⌥ is Alt. For Alt as Meta in the shell (Alt-B, Alt-F), set macos-option-as-alt = true in your Ghostty config.
